What is the purpose of Newsela?
Newsela is an instructional content tool that allows teachers to find articles with appropriate reading levels for their students. Newsela articles also feature questions and writing prompts that align with common core standards.

Newsela is an online news-as-literacy platform featuring current articles in seven categories: War & Peace, Science, Health, Kids, Money, Law, and Arts.
How do you view student work on Newsela?
Newsela’s activity feed show recent school and student activity in Newsela.
- Click Binder at the top of the page.
- Select Activity Feed from the drop-down menu.
- This will bring up the recent work completed by students in your class and recent teachers who have joined your school.
Is Newsela a primary source?
Newsela lets you do that. The cool thing is that the Library also provides a series of biographies, speeches, and basic history articles as well as primary sources. And it’s not a huge database of stuff yet but you’ll get many of the basic US and World history documents that you’re probably already using.
How do I make a Newsela account?
To create a Newsela account connected to a student Microsoft account,
- Go to newsela.com.
- Click Join Now.
- Select “I’m a student”
- Enter your teacher or caregivers’ class code.
- When prompted to enter your name and other account information, click the Microsoft icon.
How do I change my role in Newsela?
On the Account tab, teachers can change their name by following these steps:
- Click the edit icon next to your name.
- Enter a new name.
- Click Save. This will change how your name appears in Newsela for you, your students, and other staff members at your school.
How do you retake a quiz on Newsela as a student?
In the student’s Reading Summary tab, find your class listed and click the down-arrow button on the far right. This will bring up all assignments for this class. Find the quiz you want to reset. Click the three dots on the right side and select Reset Quiz.
